Amino Acid Derivative · Fatty Acid Transport
L-Carnitine
Fatty-acid oxidation, performance
Mechanism
L-carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound synthesized from lysine and methionine. Its primary role is shuttling long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane via the carnitine palmitoyltransferase system, making them available for beta-oxidation. It also buffers acyl-CoA buildup and may reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress.
Indications
Regulatory status
L-carnitine is available OTC in oral form and via 503A compounding as injectable L-carnitine. Injectable formulations require a prescription.
